“English Newsoms Cellars is located at Lubbock, Texas.” That’s a tagline you seldom see on a web site about a wine-producing facility. But the story of English Newsom Cellars really is fascinating. The famous winemaker, Tommy English, established it in Lubbock back in 1982. He became known as an English wine purveyor because many people in that part of the world enjoyed his wines.

“English Newsoms Cellars is operated by Tommy English, a Texan born and bred tycoon. He owns the winery, which is situated in Lubbock, Texas.” That tagline sounds familiar. It’s another way English, who is actually based in California, got his start. He grew up in Texas and drank his share of wines as a youth.

“He was so taken with growing grapes in South Africa that he decided to return to make them for his grape production business. A shipment of grapes from South Africa arrived on his desk one day. He tasted them and knew they were superior to anything else available at that time. He invested the initial capital and opened his first facility in Lubbock. It was a small affair, but since then the business has expanded to include wineries throughout Texas and New Mexico.”

According to the web site, “Mr. English is passionate about providing excellent tasting wines from his farm to the public. His personal attention and commitment to quality have created a large following of fans and clients throughout Texas and New Mexico. In 2021, English launched his first flagship store in Lubbock. The location is still open daily with new wines added to the collection each day.” The website doesn’t indicate whether or not any of English’s wines are Texas exclusive.

The company does say that English has cellars located throughout Texas. The web site doesn’t indicate if those cellars are Class A or Class B. Class A is the largest and most expensive. Class B are smaller and less expensive than Class A. You should keep in mind that the company does own and operates all of its land and buildings. They don’t rent them to their customers.

A representative of English-Newsom is listed as the company’s president and also on the phonebook. English has retail outlets in Houston, Texas and Las Vegas, Nevada. The web site indicates that English plans to expand his retail locations into the Texas metropolis. A telephone number is listed for the location at 5161 Neches Street. The address and phone number are listed on the web site as well as other print media.
